We who are old did not ask to be tested by time, to learn through our suffering nor to become heroes. We would rather life had not asked quite so much of us—presented even a few less occasions to which we had to rise.
Yet but one white crane dipping and soaring above the river can do much to alleviate the weight of sacrifices made along the way. Some losses were offered up. Others were suffered. At 71, I have finally let go, but I am not empty. Rather, I am overflowing with more emotions than I know what to do with.
At once, grieving and celebrating—age-appropriate and well-earned. Is this the final gate though which we must pass to find wisdom? And what is this we find, at the end of our journey? How magnificent this life we’re living, if only we let it.
