#5 The Wisdom Collection: Catching the Breeze

When I was young, my sails often filled with air. Even now, some days are effortless as I race across the surface of the hours overflowing with more life than I know what to do with.  Other days, I pull at the ropes hoping to catch just enough wind to keep moving forward:  just engaged, active, caring, courageous enough.

And then there are the days when there is no breeze to capture at all. But even these days, if I don’t make a fuss about the way things used to or could be, can be sweeter than I’d ever imagined.

Just yesterday, I was zipping along in full sail. I enjoyed the energy, the purposefulness. At the same time, there was a sense of freedom because I did not worry that the wind might change direction or die down.

When we are young, we need billowing sails because we have so many miles to go.  I don’t need as much now—just as much as necessary. The slightest breeze can be more welcomed and appreciated in older age than the great blasts of energy we previously enjoyed. But this comes about only once we avail ourselves to drifting through the sweet joy of life, no longer worrying about where we must get to.
