How sobering, that moment when we come to realize that we are capable of a peculiar greatness. As we grow over time into our unique, authentic self, what others think of us becomes less and less of a concern. We lose our filters and find words issuing forth that may not be judicious, but are certainly honest.
Others may one day stumble across us as if we were benevolent orbs, shedding light like the spring sun. But on other days, they will find us raging like a winter storm, unleashed and unrepentant. Whatever they may encounter, we will be neither rewarding nor punishing, teaching nor modeling. It is as though we will have become forces of nature, something with which others must deal. What it actually takes to live authentically comes as a revelation, given that the knife that cuts us off so painfully is the very knife that rids us of that which we no longer want or need in our lives. What remains is formidable! But still, we must remind ourselves, when we succeed at this, we are not being difficult. We are simply being ourselves.
