The Inconvenient Bits

Today’s blog is not news to you. You are not who you used to be. You thought your persona would go the distance, but it’s already cracking. And if that weren’t unsettling enough, who are these poor neglected souls tumbling out through the fissures? You know the ones I’m talking about—the parts of yourself you’d thought you’d stashed neatly away long ago.

There is one who feels unlovable, another who feels unacceptable and another who is devoid of hope. They are among the crowd of stragglers who began showing up when the applause stopped, the career ended, the last child moved away.

Nuisances all, they were meant to have been delegated to the deep shadows decades ago while you busied yourself with building a successful life for yourself, and there they were to remain forever. Apparently the inconvenient bits of yourself were unaware of your master plan, however, and have arrived on your door stoop at the first opportunity, tattered baggage in hand, asking something of you. Can you love us anyway?

I know that some days, you experience their uninvited presence as a betrayal of all that you worked so hard to construct. On these days, to assent too quickly will not be acceptance but denial. But things will begin shifting the moment you find the courage to open the door anyway, and let them in.

When you do, you will discover something unexpected. For among them are not only the ones who have been let down by life, but innovators, frolickers and eccentrics who have no interest in what others might think. Put on the kettle for all the peculiar, quirky, wounded and disowned parts of yourself who have come, as it turns out, not to take you down, but to make you whole.

Yes, it is true that you are not who you used to be. You are so much more.
